Reimagining a Forgotten Silo District: the architecture of an urban precinct

Macio grew up in an architectural household, visiting construction sites with his father. He went on to study at UCT and the Architectural Association in London. Since founding VDMMA in 1991 with Anya van der Merwe, the practice has won numerous competitions and awards.

Macio is intrigued by the evolution of the idea into built structure, while searching for an architecture which is both rational and poetic and which avoids meaningless form and pattern-making..Schooled in the tradition of Modernism, he believes that the Modernist programme is  incomplete and that paradigm shifts, such as the emergence of the requirement for sustainability, within the context of global economic instability, have irreversibly changed the architectural design process.
