Curating a City
Thomas has Masters degrees in both architecture and urban design and spent time working as a researcher in the fields of oral history and civic engagement before going into professional practice.
Since forming Local Studio in 2012, he has directed his efforts at inventing new directions for African architecture and urbanism through innovations in community participation, public-space design and alternative construction methodologies.
His firm is steadily growing into one of the leading firms dealing with public space and social infrastructure in South Africa. It recently won the Saint Gobain Architecture for Social Gain Award. Current projects include the design of a pedestrian promenade and affordable housing tower in Braamfontein and a commemorative arch for Desmond Tutu in Cape Town. The firm has also recently been selected as the urban designer on a development framework for Fordsburg and Mayfair in Johannesburg.
